Neat little practical AC power meter for level 1 EV charger
I bought the HD (better display) version of the 40-300V AC 100A 6 displays meter to monitor my electric car’s level 1 home charging. Only the second day since installing, it works really well, accurate voltage, current is as expected and kWh charge agrees as to what my Leaf says. The display is readable from all angles and bright enough for all day use in my garage. I plan to reset the display on my electric bill reading date to compute my monthly fuel cost for my EV. To install tap across the garage supply after the switch, and feed the black wire through the toroid…..straight forward, though electrical knowledge and following safety rules is required – or please ask an electrician to install. In my case a slightly larger unit and display would be preferred – though I can see the size advantage of fitting into a standard dual size power box as a nice tool for electrical work, as others have done…. probably I will get myself a second unit for the same use.

Working well after 1 month – I have some comments about other reviews
I bought two (KWS-AC301 50v-300v/100A Pro+) of these to do a load study while planning my solar power system. This unit shows 8 values including Power Factor and Temperature. I connected both to 100 watt lamp to validate the accuracy. Voltage and current readings on both units were within 1% of my Klein professional meter. Power Factor displayed 1.0 which is correct since it was a pure resistive load, and Kwh calculated correctly over time. So the good news is they passed the bench test with flying colors.I’ve had them connected to my 240v well pump. I take daily readings at the same time each day to determine daily usage. Current flow is 8.2A, right in line with the pump manufacturer’s specs. The run time feature makes it really easy to determine how long the pump actually runs each day and the kwh consumption.A couple of comments regarding using this data correctly and comments from others regarding inaccurate or confusing information:1. There are several comments about kw not calculating the same as volts multiplied by amps. This is most likely NOT an error in the meter because this is AC power, not DC power. Unless the load is purely resistive, (most are not) kw will NOT equal volts multiplied by amps (known as VA or Volt-Amps). This is due to something called Power Factor (Google it). If the overall load is inductive (i.e. motors, fans, pumps, refrigerators, freezers, etc) or capacitive (i.e. Computers, TVs, etc) kw and VA will not be the same. If your meter does not display Power Factor, you can calculate it by the formula PF = watts/(volts x amps). Typical power factor for homes range from .75 to 1.00 depending on what is running in the home at any given time.2. 240 VAC split phase measurements – You need to understand the load you are measuring in order to get the correct reading. If you are measuring a single device (such as a well pump, dryer or EV Charge Station) they typically are 240V “split phase”. You can measure this with ONE meter. Put the probe on ONE wire. It will display 120 volts. There is no neutral wire so the amps flowing in the other leg is the same. Take the kw reading and multiply times two, because the meter is showing 120 volts, but the actual circuit is 240 VAC. You could also install two meters and simply add the kw values. If the panel is feeding multiple 120 volt circuits using two primary legs L1 and L2, you should use two meters – one on each leg. A 120 volt circuit has current flow through the neutral, so the current flow on L1 and L2 may be different. With that said, the CT diameter of these coils is small – this meter may not work depending on the size of the conductors you want to measure. You won’t be able to measure the current flowing through your 200A main panel.

What can I say, I am more than happy with this product. Considering it’s approachable price tag I wanted to get one. I was a bit confused with the color display as I have not see this style/tech before. I don’t know how new it is, but I like it. It appears to be a revers version of a standard calculator LCD, but with a color filter over specified areas and a back light to give this appearance. (if this is how it’s done, then it’s a winner design). I have attached a few pictures of what I did with my product; Since I was not sure if the CT would be affected by a metal outlet box I bought a plastic one. I bought a faceplate with two long rectangle slots to fit the standard size outlets and switches for it. I bought a (slim design) GROUNDED fault circuit interrupter outtlet/switch for one of the rectangle holes and the other rectangle hole I would modify the DROK to fit in as if it was made for this plate. I wired the outlet switch to the outlet on the to turn the outlet on or off. It is between the switch wiring and the outlet that I applied the CT to. This way, when I plug in my contraption with the switch in the off mode, it will only be showing me the voltage (I find this convenient) When I turn the outlet switch to the on position, the fault light will turn on green (next to the ground of the outlet) and once I plug something in the outlet I start getting readings for the current and wattage. This has been such a great product. My outlet is rated for 15 amps, my heavy duty cord to the plastic box is rated for 20 amps (more heavy duty for give it longer wear and tear life).I have written to DROK a few times and asked him if they plan to redesign this product to have a face design to work in this type of face plate. I told him that this would be a bigger hit if they could do this. I also hope they come out with a “True RMS” version of this device as trms is far more critical with measuring amperage in sign wave/AC currents.To modify the DROK to fit into the second rectangle hole, I had to cut off the clips, fine two pieces of plastic parts with a hole just big enough for the outlet cover screws to fit into, and apply a bolt on the underside to get this to fit and work properly. If you ask me, it actually looks like it was designed to be used in this set up, and I’m very happy how well it came out!

Bought 2 for a portable generator monitor box. Works great. Make sure that the cutout dimensions are precise as there is not much wiggle room.

I got this for measuring the power draw and kWh usage for my car charger and it works great. It is about the size of a 1 gang switch and was fairly easily adaptable to a 4 inch square electrical box in this case. The display fits nicely behind a 1 gang Decora style wall plate opening and you can easily access the reset button.

Very well built and accurate energy meter, that is really accurate. Super easy to install and hook up.Provides excellent information to keep track of energy and performance of the power consumption. The temperature probe is a great addition. Either mount onto a surface for the surface temperature, or leave loose for ambient temperature.
